I wanted to share this site I stumbled across the other day, Life Is Beautiful. It’s a completely pointless site in my opinion, but very nice to use. It's simple nature means everything you need is on the front page; everything except why someone took the time to create this site. It feels really fluid and there isn’t an ounce of Flash anywhere.
I was watching TV last night and came in half way through a documentary about people with Tourettes syndrome, the apatly named Tourettes: I swear I can't help it. From the start I was transfixed, I have never really understood this neurological condition but recent shows, Shameless for example, have made me wonder about it. The show followed two people, a young lad, Greg Storey, who was diagnosed in 2002 and John Davidson, a gentleman in his late 30s/early 40s. He was diagnosed in 1988. Their teenage years could not have been different; John was an outcast, at home and at school. Ignorance of his condition was rife in the 1980s so he was bullied continuously and received no support from his family, especially his AWFUL mother.
Greg’s Tourettes came on suddenly at the age 7 and as a consequence, his early Tourettes experience must have seemed very scary. For a while he would simply collapse and be unable to move and only communicate through blinking. With the support of his friends and family (incidentally, his mother looked like she had come straight from the 1980s) he is coping with the cards he’s being dealt and should be cited as an example to us all. Especially when you hear his story about the best day of his life, it was sunny and he only had one tick during the whole day.
This program is only up for six more days and I cannot recommend it enough. http://bbc.co.uk/i/ksj56/
Well, I removed the 'Who is better, Lennon or McCartney' poll earlier this week. Thank you everyone who took the time to cast their vote, I got a better response than I had hoped for. A quick analysis follows.
Today I became embroiled in a Skype discussion with an ill-informed gothic church burner with some Beatles issues. I’d like to confirm that I am aware this particular person gets his jollies from instigating and fuelling these kinds of discussions and I have wasted my lunch trying to get him to back his arguments up.
But they're so basic, here’s a select few:
‘John said that the Beatles were a shit band’
‘Macca has basically spent the rest of his career riding on the coat tails of John and flogging the rotting carcass that was the Beatles’
While I found it hard to understand his rabid, confused, black nail varnish soaked, animal like points, there were a few moments of clarity, one being his insistence at taking an online poll of the topic: Who’s the best, Lennon or McCartney?
Now I don’t think it’s as simple as this, in my eyes they are both great in different ways. For that purpose I have added 'both' alternatives to the poll. Please, if you have read this far would you mind casting a quick vote. I have no idea why I have done this as I do not even officially recognise his argument; I think it’s just for the safety of any local places of worship. I wouldn’t want them destroyed by a Beatles hating, gothic churchburner with Michael J Fox style high tops on.
Just wanting to post a selection of wireframes; I find it's a brilliant and creative way to convey my ideas. This post is for me and therefore really erratic; this area is something I intend to practice so I'm leaving this as a base to gradually build on.
Most of my time throughout the last few weeks has been taken up with writing the ‘dull’ side of OER, legal copy. I have spent loads of time researching Terms and Conditions, Privacy/Takedown policies, FAQs and general guidance. It has been a particularly weighty process, sifting through many legal documents, trying to understand the sentences. Some of them go for a few lines without any punctuation, it makes a difficult read. There is also no interesting way to represent this information.
